LITERARY AWARDS:
I have won numerous literary awards in both fiction and poetry, beginning with the Academy of American Poets’ Prize, and the Pushcart Prize’s Honor Roll. My short fiction has won 1st prize from New Letters, 2nd Prize from Francis Ford Coppola’s Zoetrope: All-Story, 2nd prize in the Asheville Writers’ Workshop’s International Fiction Contest, 3rd Prize from the Raymond Carver Short Story Contest, and was finalist for Nimrod’s Katherine Anne Porter Prize and the Fiction Writers at Work Fellowship Competition.
I received a 2008 Minnesota State Arts Board Grant for work on my novel-in-progress, History Artist.
My second book of poetry, The Stone of Language, published in 2004, was a finalist in manuscript form in the following competitions: the Philip Levine Poetry Competition; Copper Canyon Press’s Hayden Carruth Award; Utah State University Press’s May Swenson Poetry Award; Cleveland State University’s Poetry Center Prize; and Alice James Books.
Some of the many awards my poems have received include 1st prizes from Another Chicago Magazine and Southern Poetry Review, and distinctions as finalist from The Paterson Literary Review and The Madison Review, among others.
I won the Loft’s Mentor Contest in poetry, as well as their Writers on Stage Contest (the performance of “Secret Traffic” resulting from this last competition won the Twin Cities Critics’ Kudos Award). In 1999, I was co-writer on “Hear My Voice”, a theatrical piece for which Blackberry Productions, a Black and Latino theater group active in NYC for 20 years, received a development grant from the New York State Council on the Arts.
PUBLICATIONS: FICTION
In 2008, The Stories of Devil-Girl, a novella, was published by Modern History Press.
In 2003, a 2-volume CD set of The Stories of Devil-girl (a novella) was released. In 2000, an excerpt from my novel-in-progress, More Than The Wind, appeared in the Fall Issue of Harvard Review.
“Cold Ground”, a short story, appeared in 1991 in New Letters, and was reprinted the following year in A Pocketful of Prose: Contemporary Short Fiction, ed. David Madden; Holt, Rinehart and Winston, Inc., 1992.
Selections of short fiction from The Clerk’s Biography were published in The WARM Journal in Minneapolis, won the Loft’s Writers on Stage contest, and were performed at the Southern Theater.
